TIANB is part of a recently formed Business Minimum Wage Coordination Committee (BMWCC), where common concerns relate specifically to the NB government's plan for incrementally increasing the minimum wage.
Business owners are very concerned about the increased operational costs and effects that will be generated by the increase in minimum wage.
It was noted that most if not all business employers are paying more than the current minimum wage. However, each time an increase to the minimum wage occurs, a domino effect is created throughout the business forcing employers in for profit and not-for-profit businesses to make either or all of the following choices.
• Increase the wage of those already receiving higher than minimum wage in order to have wage economy within the operation
• Decrease hours for full, part-time and seasonal staff
• Eliminate job positions
• Accept a significant reduction in profit and revenues resulting from wage economy and the related employment fees based on salaries such as mercs, worksafe and healthplan costs.
